Instructor: Yvonne Iten-Scott

Yvonne Iten-Scott is a fibre artist residing in Erin, Ontario. Her primary medium is wool fibre, and she uses multiple techniques, including hand stitching, hooking, punching, felting, braiding, wool appliqué and art quilts. She is a faculty member at the Haliburton School of Art and Design in both the Fibre Art Certificate and the Continuing Education programmes. Additionally, she has taught workshops internationally.

 

She has completed artist residencies in Iceland, Morocco and the Shetland Islands. Iten-Scott is the past president of the International Guild of Handhooking Rugmakers and is an Oxford certified punch needle instructor. She has won numerous awards, and her pieces are held in private collections. Iten-Scott’s work has been published in magazines including What Women Create, Rug hooking Magazine, Fibre Focus and Hyperallergic. Iten-Scott has recently garnered significant attention for the censorship of her work Origin by the American Quilting Society in 2025.

Saturday Morning Workshop 9:15am – 11:45am

Introduction to Tapestry Weaving

In this workshop you will learn how to warp a 9 x 15 inch tapestry loom. We will be using lots of fun fibres such as regular and chunky yarn, roving, sari silk and more. We will also blend colours with thinner fibres.

 Various ways to add your fibres will be taught such as plain weave, soumak stitch, rya knots, split tapestry and half hitch knots.

 We will then cut our tapestry from the loom and learn how to tie it off and hang it. Take home your tapestry and your loom to make more.

Materials Fee per Student

$45 payable to instructor

 What’s Included in the Kit: 

A loom that the students will take home, warp thread, lots of materials to weave with

scissors and any yarns or fibres students wish to bring

Saturday Afternoon Workshop 9:15am – 11:45am

Oxford Punch Needle Mug Rug

In this workshop you will design and punch your own wee mug rug. Oxford certified instructor, Yvonne, will show you how to design your own pattern on monks cloth. You will then stretch your foundation cloth on a frame and we will use 100% wool yarn to needle punch your design.

 You will then learn how to finish the edges of your small rug and be knowledgeable enough to create a larger rug as your next project.

 Materials Fee per Student: 

$20 payable to instructor

 What’s Included in the Kit: 

Monks cloth, yarn for punching the project, needle and thread for finishing. A frame and punch needle can be borrowed for the workshop.

Sunday Morning Workshop 11:30am – 2:00pm

Rug Hooking for all Levels

Whether you are a seasoned rug hooker or an absolute beginner this class will cover various techniques in rug hooking and how to hook with lots of fun fibres.

You will learn how to draw a pattern on linen, techniques of hooking rugs, hooking with alternative fibres, and how to finish your rugs.

 Materials Fee per Student: 

$20 payable to instructor

Materials included in kit:

The linen backing and all fibres used in class

Student Supply List: 

Students can bring their own scissors, frames and hooks if they have them otherwise they can borrow them for class.
